God's Love Letter #45

When Jesus reached the age of about 30, He was baptized by a man named John the Baptist. Then God announced to the whole world that Jesus was His appointed one to show the world what God is like and what God expects from the people on the earth. This was a great thing that God had been planning to do from the beginning of the world.

After God the Son was baptized, Satan, the enemy of God, began to attack Jesus. Just as Satan tried to interrupt God’s plan by getting Jesus confused, he tries to do the same with the people in the world today. He never stops looking for people to confuse. Jesus showed all of us how to defeat Satan. By trusting God, we can always win over God’s enemy.

The first temptation was to try to make Jesus believe that the most important thing in the world is to make the flesh feel good. If the body has all the good things it wants, then there is no need to be concerned about the needs of other people. Jesus knew that there is more to life than making the flesh feel good. Something inside of Him wanted to reach out and love His Father in heaven and love the people around Him. That was the most important thing.

The second temptation was to try to make Jesus believe that being famous is the most important thing in the world. Being the star or hero in some big event would attract many people. Jesus could see that doing some great, public act would not change the hearts of those people watching. The people need to have selfish hearts changed into hearts that love others.

The third temptation was to try to make Jesus believe that the most important thing in the world is to accept the fact that Satan is the ruler of the world, not God. Satan told Jesus that the world belongs to him. Satan said that if Jesus would obey him instead of God, then Satan would give Jesus the whole world very quickly. Jesus knew that this was a lie. He sent Satan away from Him.
