Jesus -- the Messiah # 3

Read Mark 1:9-13.

9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the
Jordan. 10As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and
the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: "You are my
Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." 12At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert,13and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

v. 9 – Baptism was the common ritual for entering a new commitment and focus
in life. Jesus is now going to begin His ministry. As a prophet of God, John performs this rite of entrance for Jesus, not for forgiveness of sins in Jesus’ case but for public announcement of Jesus’ mission.

vv. 10-11 – Not only John but God Himself uses this occasion to announce to the world what great event is beginning. Jesus is publicly given the title of “Son” by God Himself and the Spirit Himself descends “like a dove” from heaven to point directly to Him.

Later on in church history, people reflected on how all three Presences of God were visible/audible at the same time. They came up with the picture of a mysterious Trinity, that God is One, in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

vv. 12-13 – Just as in Ramadan, there are thirty days of fasting, so Jesus spent the first 40 days of His new commission in forty days of fasting (see Luke 4:2). However, Satan knew that the battle was commencing, so he began his attack on Jesus immediately, while he was vulnerable and alone in the desert. Yet, God never abandons His servants.  God sent angels to attend Him, and Jesus didn’t even need to fear the wild animals.  Jesus came to bring victory over all evil and suffering and violence and establish God’s Kingdom of love and righteousness.  Even the wild animals were brought to harmony around Him in the desert.

When anyone seeks to fight Satan and evil in God’s battle for righteousness, he will feel like he is alone in the desert among wild animals.   Have you ever felt in that position? Did you experience the love and protection of God through His angels?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences,
